Speaking during an interview aired on Channels Television, Obi was asked what sector he would prioritize if elected president to give Nigeria an added advantage. In response, he said:
“I might not turn it around in the very first one year, but I can tell you we can make more money from agriculture than we make from oil.”
When asked which agricultural produce he would focus on, Obi emphasized the country’s rich and diverse potential:
“We have all the produce. Go and look at our rails. Do you know our railways, which the colonial masters built, were focused on where we were getting products? Nigerian land is so fertile that we can grow anything.”
Highlighting specific regions, Obi pointed to the vast agricultural capacity across the country.
“Niger State has one of the best fertile lands on the surface of the earth. The world is looking for yams, cassava, etc. We have 54,000 square kilometers of land in Taraba that can grow all that,” he said.
When asked again which crops or products he would give priority to, Obi maintained that a broad, simultaneous approach was necessary.
“All of them simultaneously because it’s an investment. That’s why I said I borrow and put in investment. You are now borrowing for production, not for consumption.”
Obi’s statements reflect his long-standing belief in agricultural reform as a sustainable path to economic transformation.
He argued that with the right policies and investments, Nigeria can reduce its dependency on oil and build a diversified, productive economy centered on its natural agricultural advantage.
