According to a report by The Sun on July 6th 2025, elder statesman and former Afenifere Secretary General, Senator Femi Okurounmu, has called on the Tinubu-led administration to enact laws enabling the creation of state police, arguing that such a move is essential if the government is genuinely committed to tackling Nigeria’s deepening insecurity crisis.
In an interview with The Sun, Okurounmu expressed serious concern over the alarming state of security in the country. He noted that the situation, already troubling under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership, has further deteriorated under the current administration.
He went on to say it appears as though security forces are not taking firm action against terrorists and insurgents.
“Also, many military officials have complained publicly that when they captured some of these terrorists, they received orders from above that they should set them free, and if they didn’t comply, they would be sanctioned. So, brilliant and patriotic soldiers, who are risking their lives to fight these insurgents, don’t have the full backing of the government,” he said.
Okurounmu also criticized the government’s ongoing release and reintegration of alleged “repentant” Boko Haram fighters, claiming that many of them are later absorbed into the military and serve as informants, ultimately putting soldiers at risk.
He suggested that such policies raise questions about the government’s intent and involvement, stating that the recurring pattern of leniency toward terrorists may point to deeper issues.
He warned that Nigerians should remain vigilant and question whether there is a hidden agenda behind the persistent attacks, and what motivations may be driving them.
