On Saturday, July 5, 2025, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri has stirred online discussions with a bold financial tip aimed at improving money management habits.
In a post on X, Omokri urged Nigerians to “temporarily stop using cash to pay for anything and pay for everything with your ATM for at least three months, preferably a year.” He emphasized the eye-opening potential of reviewing bank statements, stating, “I am telling you that nothing focuses your mind on how to use money better than seeing all the unnecessary spending that you have engaged in staring right back at you on a piece of paper.”
Omokri’s advice is said to come amid Nigeria’s cash-dominated economy, where over 90% of transactions in 2023 were cash-based, according to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data. His suggestion is said to align with a 2019 Journal of Consumer Research study, which found electronic payments increase spending awareness by 15-20% due to their traceable nature.
