In a fresh twist to the long-running political feud between two of Rivers State’s most prominent politicians, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed details of how he came to know former governor Rotimi Amaechi, crediting Elder Chidi Wihioka as the key figure who introduced them.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV, Wike declared: “Amaechi was never the one who helped me—it was Chidi Wihioka who brought him to me to help him.”
The former Rivers State governor recounted that in 1999, Amaechi had lost a state assembly election to a candidate from the All People’s Party (APP), whom he described as someone “who claims to be a human rights activist.” Faced with an election dispute, Amaechi allegedly sought support to pursue the case at the tribunal.
“In the name of God Almighty, a man must always tell himself the simple truth,” Wike said. “Elder Chidi Wihioka was the one who brought Amaechi to me… That’s why they brought Rotimi to me. So, I was the one who helped. It’s unfair,” he added, referring to Amaechi’s recent dismissive remarks about him.
Wike’s remarks have further fueled debate about the shifting alliances and rivalries that have shaped Rivers State’s political landscape over the last two decades. While the two men were once close allies under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), their relationship turned sour in the years that followed, leading to open confrontations in both local and national politics.
Analysts suggest Wike’s latest comments may be aimed at reinforcing his claim that he has historically been a kingmaker in Rivers politics, and that figures like Amaechi once depended on his influence during crucial moments.
