FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has responded to allegations of corruption and questions about the source of his wealth by stating clearly that needing money for legitimate responsibilities does not make him corrupt.
Speaking during an interview on CHANNELS TV, Wike was asked directly whether he is corrupt. He responded, “When you mean the word corrupt, no court has found me guilty to be corrupt.”
He emphasized that wanting money for personal and family needs is not a crime. “I like money,” Wike said. “Nobody can do without money. You cannot say because I say I need money to solve this, therefore I’m corrupt.”
He explained, “I need money to pay my children’s school fees. I need money to take my family’s healthcare. Does that make me to be corrupt? No.”
Wike further dismissed those who claim they are above financial interest in politics. “When a man comes in the public to say I don’t like money, you know that man is a liar,” he said.
Wike also addressed rumors that a Rolls-Royce was given to him by a contractor. He firmly denied receiving any car as a gift, saying, “I have a Rolls-Royce. Nobody gave me a Rolls-Royce.” When asked how he got his, he replied, “Of course, I bought it. So what?”
He contrasted his background with that of former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi. “I didn’t come from the same background with Amaechi,” he said. “As a student, I was using a Mercedes Benz. My father was a general manager of so many companies.
