According to a report by Leadership News on Friday, 4 July, 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that he sacrificed greatly to support Rotimi Amaechi’s rise to power as Governor of Rivers State in 2007.
Wike said he gave everything he had and put his own life in danger during the political struggle that eventually brought Amaechi into office.
Speaking on a television programme on Friday night, Wike opened up about the events leading to Amaechi’s emergence as governor.
He said he stood firmly behind Amaechi at a time when it was dangerous and costly to do so, but he did it because of his loyalty and belief in Amaechi at the time.
Wike claimed that despite all he went through for Amaechi’s political career, he was later treated unfairly.
He accused Amaechi of being ungrateful, dishonest, and lacking integrity. According to Wike, those who were not part of the struggle may never understand the personal risks he took to support Amaechi.
The former Rivers State governor said the political battle back then was intense and stressful. He added that the experience changed him, especially when he realised that those he trusted could turn their backs on him when it mattered most.
Wike also described a moment when Amaechi returned from Ghana in distress. He recalled picking him up from the airport and noticing how broken he looked. This, according to Wike, made him more determined to fight for Amaechi’s political survival, despite the threats and pressure surrounding the issue.
He said: “Amaechi came to the airport to pick me up from Ghana. He wore a face cap; he was in hot tears.
