According to a Friday 4th of July, 2025 report by Iran International English, Israel succeeded in locating and killing a senior Revolutionary Guards commander, Ali Shadmani, despite his strict avoidance of communication methods previously exploited in Israeli assassinations, his daughter revealed. The killing has intensified allegations that Israel used WhatsApp to track its targets.
“My father’s location changed every few hours. He carried no smart devices or phones. Security protocols were followed, yet during his time commanding the war headquarters, he was repeatedly targeted for assassination by Israel,” Mahdieh Shadmani wrote on Instagram on Friday.
Ali Shadmani had been appointed commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters just days before his death. He was killed only four days into the role, following the earlier assassination of his predecessor, Gholam Ali Rashid, in an Israeli strike.
Mahdieh Shadmani added that her father was not in uniform at the time of the attack, and was instead tracked and killed while wearing “plain, dusty clothes without military insignia.” Her comments came amid widespread claims that Israel leveraged the WhatsApp messaging app to locate Iranian military commanders.
During the twelve-day conflict, Iranian state media urged citizens to delete WhatsApp from their devices, accusing the platform of gathering data and passing it to Israeli intelligence. WhatsApp strongly denied these allegations, and cautioned that such claims risked being used as a justification to restrict access to essential communication services for Iranians seeking information.
Throughout the conflict, Israel reportedly targeted and eliminated several senior figures from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Confirmed deaths include Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri, Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami, IRGC Aerospace Force Chief Amir Ali and IRGC Deputy for Operations Mehdi Rabbani.
