According to a report by Daily Post, on Thursday July 3, 2025, former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged to serve only a single term in office should he secure the presidential candidacy under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections.

Amaechi made this commitment during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired by Channels Television on Thursday.

Responding to a question about power rotation if he becomes the party’s flagbearer, the former Rivers State governor maintained that respecting the informal zoning principle is essential in Nigeria’s political system.

He explained, “Absolutely. Given Nigeria’s current realities, it is important to maintain the informal arrangement of the North holding power for eight years, followed by the South for another eight years.”

Amaechi recalled his past role in challenging the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that the struggle was rooted in the need to uphold a promise made by the then administration to govern for only four years.

“When that administration failed to honour the commitment after four years, I stood my ground against it, considering it unjust,” he said.

According to him, it is now the South’s turn to complete its rightful period in power, stressing the need for equity to maintain national stability.

Hear him speak: “That will be instability at its peak because the North will react. So the best thing to do, is to support the Northern candidate to continue the balance of power.
