Former Labour Party vice presidential candidate and a key figure in the emerging opposition coalition, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has stated that he will support Peter Obi if he contests and wins the coalition’s presidential ticket. Baba-Ahmed made this known during an interview with Arise Television, where he addressed questions on his continued political alliance with Obi and the evolving dynamics of Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
He explained that his loyalty to Obi remains intact as long as they share the same political platform or goal. Baba-Ahmed added that his support would also extend to Obi should he emerge as the coalition’s consensus candidate. Going further, he revealed that in the past, he had suggested three names to Obi as possible running mates—one of whom was Nasir El-Rufai. He also said he had predicted El-Rufai’s political trajectory years ago, which is now playing out as expected.
According to him, “If Peter Obi is with me in Labour Party and we all decide to stay back in Labour Party and contest, I’m with him by default. If he contests in coalition and he wins it, I’ll give him the support. It’s left for him. I told way back… I gave him 3 names, one of which is Nasir El-Rufai that if you want, take this guy. From all indications, this is why he’s coming. Two years ago, I had predicted El-Rufai was headed this way and there are many correct calculations that I did that have come true.
