Oloye Lekan Alabi, the Ekefa Olubadan of Ibadanland, said Major General Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi and Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi were killed in Lalupon, a town near Ibadan, on July 29, 1966.

In an interview with Edmund Obilo on Splash FM 1055, Alabi said a farmer witnessed what happened on the day of the killings. He said the farmer was working on his farm when he saw a long convoy of army jeeps approaching. He said out of fear, the farmer quickly climbed a tree to hide and watch what was going on.

Alabi said the farmer saw the soldiers take Ironsi and Fajuyi into the nearby bush and killed them. He said after soldiers left, the farmer came down from the tree and went straight to report what he had seen to the village chief.

Alabi said the people of the town quickly gathered, went to the spot, and confirmed what the farmer told them. He said they also informed the Secretary to the Military Government.

In Alabi’s words: “So there was a farmer on his farm who, on seeing the long convoy coming towards him, climbed a tree and saw everything that happened. So after the soldiers did whatever they thought they had come to do at that spot, the nearest bush where they can finish them off and turned back, the farmer now came down from the tree and went to report to the chief what he saw”
