A concerned citizen of Benue, Victor Agana, has raised alarm over what he described as a worsening humanitarian and security crisis in Gwer West Local Government Area, alleging that sustained attacks have triggered mass displacement and pointed to what he believes is an attempt to take over communities.
Agana made the remarks during an interview from 4:34 on News Central TV, where he spoke on the scale of displacement in Benue and the pressure it has placed on host communities, particularly Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West.
According to him, “They are coming to takeover. See how chaotic the whole area is. Go to the local government headquarters in Naka. You will see what Naka has become. Naka that is basically supposed to house or maybe have people not more than 200,000, have over 1,000,000 people who have been displaced from all the 15 local government councils of Gwer West.”
Agana said the influx of displaced persons into Naka has overwhelmed the town and created severe humanitarian strain, with growing concerns over shelter, food, healthcare and security. He argued that the scale of displacement reflects the gravity of the attacks and the urgent need for stronger government intervention.
He maintained that the situation in Gwer West should be viewed as more than a routine security challenge, warning that communities are being emptied while displaced residents continue to struggle in overcrowded and chaotic conditions.
Agana called on both the federal and Benue State governments to respond urgently by restoring security in affected communities, supporting displaced persons and enabling residents to return safely to their ancestral homes.
His comments come amid broader concerns over insecurity and displacement in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where recurring violence has continued to spark humanitarian and political debates. Read_More…
