During an interview with Arise Television from 8:50, the Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party, Ayo Olorunfemi, openly admitted that the party had made a strategic error by branding its youth wing around the personality of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi. He said the decision, though well-intentioned at the time, has since been reversed to refocus the party on a more structured and inclusive foundation.
Olorunfemi emphasized that the Labour Party is no longer building its strategy around individuals, a shift aimed at strengthening the institution rather than centering it on a single figure. He pointed out that the initial decision to label the youth movement “Obidient” tied their operations too closely to Obi’s identity, which limited the wing’s broader engagement and sustainability.
According to him, “This time around, we’re not going to build any political program around any individual. We made that mistake of calling our youth wing Obidient. Thank God we learned from this mistake and quickly changed the name to the Directorate of Mobilization and Integration. So tell them to go and get their Obedient. Call them; they should call their Obidient to a hall and see the number of people that will appear. But if we call our own Directorate of Mobilization and Integration today, you’ll see the number that will come out. These are the people that are pulling and driving the party.”
