In a pointed critique of Nigeria’s political landscape, Segun Showunmi, a former gubernatorial candidate and prominent political figure, has lambasted the practice of frequent party switching and the pursuit of coalitions driven by personal ambition.

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on July 3, 2025, Showunmi stated, “Sometime there are no quick fixes! Those who imagine that democracy in Nigeria starts and ends with their ambitions, or their anger and disappointment or their crass ignorance will learn that not all that glitters is gold. You cannot build your party but hop from party to party screaming coalition kwalision will be asked to produce the result of their merry go round.”

His remarks is said to come amidst growing tensions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where internal factions have raised concerns over the undemocratic formation of coalitions. Musa Matara, the National Spokesman of the ADC, recently highlighted these issues in an interview on Arise News, noting, “The process that was followed to conduct the coalition was undemocratic. People were brought into the ADC without consultations with the bonafide members of the party. Members were not carried along.”
