Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor of Abia State and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Southeast Development Commission, has responded to growing political movements aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Channels TV 20:42, Kalu dismissed fears over the opposition’s momentum, stressing that preparation and hard work within the APC remain key.

“They can form their coalition, while we work very hard not to be defeated by their coalition,” Kalu said, underlining his belief that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on healthy competition. According to him, while new alliances may energize the opposition, the real test lies in which party can convince Nigerians through genuine performance.

Kalu urged the APC to avoid complacency by focusing on solving everyday challenges facing citizens, including high living costs and unemployment. He noted that political elites often lose sight of voters’ needs by becoming obsessed with internal struggles and power plays.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s economic reforms, Kalu admitted the pain they have caused but maintained that they are necessary to correct systemic issues that past administrations ignored. He emphasized that all regions, including the Southeast, are “crying” for development projects, and the government must ensure promises are matched with action.

Kalu concluded by appealing for less division among politicians and more collective effort to build a stable, prosperous country—arguing that power should ultimately be a tool to serve, not just to win elections.
