Chief Bisi Akande, a respected elder statesman and former governor of Osun State, has revealed a private conversation he had with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before he became Nigeria’s president.

In an interview with journalist Edmund Obilo on Splash FM, Akande shared how Tinubu once felt unsure about contesting for the presidency. According to Akande, some people close to Tinubu had told him that anytime they mentioned the presidency to him, he became upset. Concerned, Akande said he decided to meet Tinubu in Lagos to understand what was going on.

During their meeting, Tinubu asked Akande, “Baba, do you have money?” Then he added, “If I had the kind of money people have to be president, I’d rank with Dangote.” Tinubu was clearly expressing that he didn’t feel wealthy enough to run for president.

Akande responded by telling Tinubu that the presidency wasn’t about his personal interest. He said the Yoruba people wanted to produce a president and Tinubu happened to be their best option at the time. Using a Yoruba proverb, Akande explained that just like people offer the best animal or biggest yam when worshipping a deity, Tinubu had become the best offering for the Yoruba to achieve the presidency.

Akande added that Tinubu became quiet and appeared deep in thought after hearing those words.
