Omoyele Sowore, activist and former presidential candidate, has challenged long-held assumptions about religion and education in northern Nigeria. Speaking in a video posted by Sahara TV from 32:55 , Sowore highlighted the religious diversity of the region and debunked stereotypes surrounding northern youths and the Almajiri education system.

He pointed out that many southern Nigerians are unaware of the significant Christian populations in northern states, such as Gombe, Bauchi, and Adamawa. To his surprise, he found that in Kebbi State alone, Christians make up as much as 40% of the population. This, he argued, proves that not every northern child is bound for Almajiri schools or limited to that system of learning.

According to him, “You have seen that there’s a lot of Christians; there are a lot of Christians in Gombe, even in Bauchi, Adamawa, and Kaduna. I was surprised that there are 40% Christians in Kebbi, so it’s not like everybody in the north wants to go to Almajiri school. No, we’re just, in all honesty, breaking the back of those who are behind popularisation and the wholesale imposition of ignorance on these children.”
