Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Tinubu, has stated that Tinubu’s government is making a mistake by acting as if elections are just a few months away, even though it still has two years left in office.

In an interview with AIT, Ahmed said that the opposition parties seem to have pressured the Tinubu administration into shifting its focus from governance to politics. He said instead of concentrating on solving the country’s problems, Tinubu’s government now appears to be more interested in campaigning for re-election in 2027

Hakeem said Tinubu’s administration still has time to deliver on its promises, but it must stop acting like elections are around the corner. He said Tinubu should use the remaining two years he has in office to work hard and improve the country

In Ahmed’s words: “What we are seeing here has never happened, two years into the life of an administration the opposition unfortunately stampeded this government into thinking that we are going to be voting in 3 months time. I think it is making an elementary mistake, it is falling into a trap.

“I am not sure the opposition actually designed for this government to fall into a trap but they have fallen into a trap. They are now behaving more like they are now politicking and campaigning for re-election, rather than looking ahead and seeing that they have two years to go in their mandate. A huge amount of work”
