According to Iran International English, the controversial Iranian stockpile of highly enriched uranium was immobilized in underground tunnels during the recent 12-day conflict involving Israel and the United States (U S.). The news outlet cited three senior Israeli officials with direct access to intelligence on the matter.
The uranium is reportedly stored at the Fordow and Isfahan nuclear facilities — sites that are heavily fortified and located deep underground. The Israeli officials told Axios that military strikes carried out during the conflict effectively isolated the uranium stockpile, rendering it inaccessible for the time being.
“The stockpile is in underground tunnels under the Fordow and Isfahan nuclear sites,” one official said, confirming the facilities’ locations and emphasizing the challenge Iran now faces in retrieving the material.
Although, no official confirmation has come from Iranian authorities, Israeli intelligence officials maintain confidence in their assessment. According to the sources, any Iranian effort to recover or move the uranium would likely be detected. “We believe Israel will detect any Iranian attempt to recover it,” one of the officials stated.
The development follows weeks of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, sparked by regional hostilities and concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Israel has long accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies, insisting its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
The Fordow and Isfahan sites are known to be among Iran’s most secure nuclear installations. Their fortification has made any attempt to disrupt nuclear activities extremely difficult in the past. However, during the conflict, Israeli and U.S. strikes appear to have succeeded in compromising access routes or key infrastructure leading to the uranium reserves.
This reported setback for Iran could alter the dynamics of nuclear negotiations and regional power plays. Still, Israeli officials remain vigilant. “Any movement will be closely watched,” said one of the officials, underscoring continued monitoring efforts.
While the full extent of the damage remains unclear, the temporary containment of Iran’s enriched uranium represents a significant tactical outcome of the conflict.
