Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, a well-known human rights attorney and the former head of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, recently replied to a statement.
Using his official Twitter account, he reacted to a comment made on the recent labor union activities by Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s special assistant on media and strategy.
According to Onanuga, the workers should be grateful that they are not under military control and that their decision to shut down the national grid was an overreaction.
Odinkalu expressed his dissatisfaction with Onanuga’s comments and disagreed with them.
In reaction, Professor Odinkalu wrote, “This is where the people who brought democracy to Nigeria have landed, oh!”
The dialogue between Odinkalu and Onanuga demonstrates the ongoing hostilities between the government and labor unions on issues like pay increases and energy prices.
There has been discussion on both sides of the national grid shutdown and other trade union efforts.
While some see it as a danger to fundamental services and an infringement on personal space, others see it as an essential step in the battle against injustice….Sée Móre
