Senator Ali Ndume, Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate and a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has welcomed the rise of a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections but expressed deep concern over the fragile state of Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to a recent report by Arise Television, Ndume described the growing coalition of opposition forces as a necessary development for democracy, while sharply criticizing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and other opposition platforms for failing to fulfill their roles effectively.
“Let me say that this coalition that is developing outside the major political party that is our APC is to me a positive development in democracy. There can be no effective democracy without opposition which the major supposedly the opposition has failed to provide,” he stated.
However, he condemned the recent wave of political defections across party lines, describing them as opportunistic and unprincipled: “You can see the area of decampment. That means telling the public out there that you have no principles. You only need a platform. And even if you need a platform, it should be where your conscience will be with you. But that is not the case.”
Warning of a broader risk to Nigeria’s democratic system, Ndume emphasized the dangers of a weakened opposition: “It is very, very dangerous for democracy itself. If there is no visible effective opposition, that democracy is under threat of its own.”
He also criticized the increasing influx of politicians into the ruling APC, cautioning that indiscriminate absorption could destabilize the party: “So you see a ship, as the president said, there is vacancy in the ship. But if you overload that ship, it is likely going to capsize. And if it capsizes, you lose everybody.”
Using vivid analogies to drive his point, he likened the APC to a vehicle under strain: “It’s a big challenge when you open your ship. Even if it is a trailer that has four tires, talk less of ship. If you keep on overloading the ship because others are desperate… most of them are not coming based on principles.”
PDP Chieftain, Dele Momodu reacted to the news on his official Instagram account on June 26, 2025. Momodu shared the video of Senator Ndume with the caption: “Politicians are decamping, while the people who elected us are not”
