Political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has taken a swipe at former Senate President David Mark, questioning his legitimacy as a leader of the opposition.
In an appearance on Arise TV, Sowore criticized what he described as the recycling of old political figures who, in his view, contributed to Nigeria’s democratic setbacks.
Speaking candidly during the interview, Sowore said, “If David Mark was president of the Senate for 8 years and was a military ruler who said democracy can never come in his lifetime and now he is the leader of the opposition, then I don’t think they have anything to offer.”
He emphasized that individuals with a record of anti-democratic positions cannot credibly champion the democratic aspirations of Nigerians. Sowore accused the current opposition of being composed largely of establishment figures whose primary aim is to retain influence rather than promote genuine change.
According to him, these figures are not offering solutions but are instead “here to distract Nigerians.” He described their reemergence as part of a broader political pattern where former power brokers rebrand themselves to maintain relevance without addressing the systemic issues plaguing the country.
David Mark, a retired general and long-serving senator, has long been a controversial figure in Nigerian politics. His past comments casting doubt on the future of democracy in the country continue to draw criticism, especially from younger generations seeking new leadership.
Sowore’s remarks have reignited debate around political credibility and generational change, with many Nigerians echoing his sentiments online. As the country moves toward another election season, calls for authentic, accountable leadership are once again at the forefront of national discourse.
