According to The Guardian, Iranian officials have confirmed that the Fordow uranium enrichment plant was struck by US airstrikes in a significant escalation of the conflict involving Iran and its nuclear program.

Morteza Heydari, spokesman for the Qom Provincial Crisis Management Headquarters, stated that after Iran’s air defenses were activated, part of the Fordow site was attacked by “enemy airstrikes,” according to a translation by Al Jazeera.

Fordow is one of Iran’s two main uranium enrichment sites, located approximately 80 to 90 meters underground beneath a mountain, making it heavily fortified and difficult to target.

The site was previously struck by Israeli forces earlier in the conflict, but no visible damage was reported at that time by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

US President Donald Trump confirmed the strikes on social media, describing the operation as “very successful” and announcing that a full payload of bombs was dropped on the Fordow facility, along with two other key sites in Natanz and Esfahan. Trump noted that all aircraft involved safely exited Iranian airspace after the mission.

The US military reportedly used B-2 stealth bombers equipped with bunker-buster bombs designed to penetrate deep underground, such as the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), to reach the fortified Fordow site.

Iranian state media reported that the bombed sites did not contain radioactive materials at the time of the strikes, suggesting limited immediate risk of radiation exposure.

However, the attack marks a serious escalation in US involvement in the conflict and increases tensions in the region.

This operation aims to halt Iran’s nuclear enrichment capabilities, which have long been a concern for the US, Israel, and their allies due to fears of nuclear weapons development.

The strikes follow weeks of rising hostilities and failed diplomatic efforts to resolve the nuclear dispute peacefully.
