Dr. Bitrus Pogu, President of the Middle Belt Forum has expressed deep concern over what he described as negligence by Nigeria’s security agencies following an ignored security alert that allegedly foretold a recent attack in Yelewata, Benue State.

During an appearance on Arise TV, Dr. Pogu revealed that he had received a warning message on the 27th of last month, indicating plans by suspected Fulani herders to strike the community. The message, he said, reached him through a private contact and he believes security forces must have had access to the same information earlier.

“I had on the 27th of last month a security alert sent to me by somebody that the Fulani were planning to attack Yelewata. I have it on my phone,” Dr. Pogu said. “That means before it got to me, it would have reached the security apparatus of this country.”

The Middle Belt leader criticized the lack of preemptive action, stressing that such lapses contribute to the persistent insecurity plaguing rural communities in the region. He argued that the failure to act on credible intelligence has led to unnecessary loss of lives and heightened fear among residents.

Dr. Pogu emphasized the need for a responsive and accountable security structure that can effectively intercept threats and protect vulnerable populations. He also called on the federal government to investigate how such alerts are handled by security personnel.

Yelewata and other communities in Benue State have repeatedly been the target of violent attacks, with calls growing louder for lasting solutions to the ongoing conflict.
