People in the Yelwata community in Makurdi blocked roads on Thursday to demand urgent help. Fidelis Igban, a resident and displaced person, said local officials are not properly managing the support meant for the community, making their situation worse.
In report from PUNCH on June 19, 2025, Igban mentioned that residents are suffering from hunger and poor living conditions. He pointed out that even though food and supplies have been donated, much of it does not reach the people in need because local officials are keeping relief items for themselves.
Igban also observed that visits from important figures like Senator George Akume and Dr. Paul Enenche have not brought any real help. He stated that, although Senator Akume made some donations, the community has not seen any results, leaving many people in a tough spot.
Igban said,
“Senator George Akume came to the camp and donated some items for onward distribution to IDPs. Up till now, we have not seen anything. The Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Dr. Paul Enenche, came here and donated materials for our consumption, yet nothing gets to us. We are starving and dying here. We want to go back to our homes.”
