Former Labour Party stalwart and Obi-Datti campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo has revealed a behind-the-scenes moment that shows the internal tensions within the party.
In an interview on SYMFONI TV, Okonkwo disclosed a private conversation he had with members of Peter Obi’s inner circle, warning them that if Peter Obi Obi reconcile with the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, he wouldn’t go back with him.
“I called all the people that were in the inner circle and told them the same,” Okonkwo said. “Look at what our oga is trying to do. He wants to go back with the Abure people. If he does it, he’s not going to go back with me. Because I do not swallow back my words.”
Okonkwo’s remarks highlight his firm stance against the leadership of Julius Abure, whose tenure as National Chairman has been marred by controversy and questions of legitimacy. The party’s convention earlier in the year, held under Abure’s leadership, was rejected by many reform-minded members and even publicly disapproved of by Obi himself.
The tension escalated when rumours began circulating that Obi had softened his position and was considering working again with the same faction he once distanced himself from. Okonkwo’s revelation suggests this move was already being discussed privately, prompting his decision to part ways with the party entirely.
By drawing a line in the sand, Okonkwo has reinforced his reputation for principled politics even at the cost of personal alliances.
