According to Punch newspaper,villagers in Umunobo, Nkwu-Emeke, and Akalovu communities in Emekuku, Owerri North LGA of Imo State, are living in fear after spotting suspected masked herdsmen in the area.
On Wednesday morning, residents said they saw eight armed men, all masked, advancing toward the village from nearby bushes.
Witnesses claimed the men were carrying AK-47 rifles, which caused panic and fear across the community.
Locals explained that they had previously clashed with herders over cows destroying their crops. Although the disagreement was resolved, the sudden appearance of masked gunmen significantly brought new tension.
In response, the Imo State Police Command said they are aware of the situation and have acted quickly.
Police officers from various divisions have been deployed to the area, along with members of the Special Intervention Squad and soldiers from the Nigerian Army.
The police assured residents that the situation is under control and urged them to remain calm. Patrols are ongoing, and security forces are maintaining a strong presence to prevent any possible attacks.
