According to the Daily Post Newspaper, Ugochukwu Orji, a Nigerian immigration officer, has been awarded a cash prize of ₦5 million for apprehending a fugitive traditional healer from Enugu State, who had been on the run for his alleged involvement in ritual killings.

The financial reward was presented by Chief Ebuka Onunkwo, a prominent businessman and philanthropist. Onunkwo, who is also vying for the Anambra South senatorial seat under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), extended the gesture during a meeting at his residence in Ihembosi, Ekwusigo LGA, Anambra State.

Orji, while carrying out his responsibilities at the Seme border in May, identified and detained a man known online as “Ichie Billion,” who was trying to cross into the Republic of Benin on a motorbike. The suspect, accused of posing as a traditional medicine practitioner while allegedly committing heinous crimes, was attempting to flee Nigeria when Orji recognized him from social media reports.

During the presentation, Chief Onunkwo, who also heads Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., said the ₦5 million cheque was part of the company’s broader mission to support ethical conduct and reinforce societal values through its corporate social initiatives.

“We still have patriots in this country,” Onunkwo stated. “Ugochukwu’s action proves that standing for justice is not obsolete. At a time when corruption threatens every corner of our system, he chose honor over compromise. This contribution is not just a token of appreciation but a symbol to promote integrity.”

He further called on the Nigerian Immigration Service to formally commend the officer and use this case to inspire similar actions. “Let this serve as a benchmark — integrity should not go unnoticed. We must make role models out of those who choose the right path,” he added.

“I acted as though I was cooperating to avoid creating a scene,” Orji explained. “After receiving confirmation from my superior officer, I placed him under arrest. A search of his phone revealed voice messages that clearly indicated efforts to cover up his crimes.”

Hear him speak: “I stopped him and confronted him with his photo. He denied it at first, saying it was his brother. But I insisted. He then tried to bribe me with N3 million, then N7 million, N10 million, and eventually N15 million, with his wife promising to send the money.”
