According to a video uploaded by Channels Television on YouTube, Mike Ozekhome, a senior advocate of Nigeria and constitutional lawyer, expressed concerns about the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu might end up running against himself.

Speaking on the program Hard Copy, Ozekhome said, “With a strategic person like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has been able to put in place in all the critical sectors of governance… I see Tinubu virtually running against himself. That’s what I see. I may be wrong.

“I want to challenge Nigerians to do something to prove me wrong that Tinubu will not be running against himself in 2027”.

Ozekhome’s remarks came amid widespread endorsements for Tinubu’s re-election bid, including surprising support from some opposition leaders.

He warned that such endorsements could be a symptom of a party in panic mode and a sign that Nigeria is gradually drifting toward a one-party state.

The legal expert criticized the fractured nature of opposition parties, noting that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party, among others, are internally divided.

This fragmentation, he argued, weakens the chances of a strong opposition coalition emerging to challenge Tinubu’s dominance.

Beyond the electoral outlook, Ozekhome lamented the general state of governance and economic hardship in Nigeria.

He highlighted the challenges of poverty, insecurity, and corruption, calling on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable.

Ozekhome’s assessment underscores the urgent need for political renewal, and active civic engagement in Nigeria if the country is to avoid the pitfalls of autocracy and ensure a genuinely competitive democratic process in 2027 and beyond.
