According to a report by Daily Post, seasoned broadcaster Rufai Oseni has voiced strong disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks concerning critics of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project. Oseni, known for his candid political commentary, expressed disappointment over the President’s suggestion that those questioning the project’s cost should “go and stay in Idumota,” a bustling district in Lagos Island.
The comment was made by President Tinubu during the commissioning ceremony of the Deep Sea Port Access Road in Lagos on Thursday. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, also speaking at the event, defended the coastal road initiative and urged Tinubu to disregard negative feedback, referencing Oseni among other Nigerians who have sought clarity on the project’s actual cost. Umahi called on the President to accelerate funding for infrastructure projects despite public scrutiny.
In response, Oseni criticized the tone of Tinubu’s message, describing it as dismissive. Speaking during The Morning Show on Arise Television, Oseni emphasized the importance of accountability and open communication between public officials and citizens. “For him to say ‘if you don’t like the project, go to Idumota’, it’s not fair,” Oseni stated. “We recognize the effort going into national development, but criticism is a part of democracy.”
He stressed that many Nigerians who would benefit from the coastal road live far from Idumota, including communities stretching towards Ajah. “These are citizens who deserve answers, not insults,” he said, urging the President to foster transparency rather than antagonism.
Oseni concluded by calling for a detailed breakdown of the project’s cost and a commitment to public engagement. “It’s not about politics; it’s about people’s lives,” he said. “This project must reflect their needs and economic realities.”
