According to a video uploaded by Channels Television on YouTube, John Ameh emphasized that it is the people who ultimately testify whether a government is working, not those within the government itself.
He cited Abia State as an example, saying, “You go to Abia, it’s Abians that are telling people that their government is working”.
Ameh stressed that the same standard should be applied to the federal government of Nigeria to determine its effectiveness.
Ameh, a former presidential candidate and national chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, expressed deep disappointment with the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration two years after taking office.
He criticized the government for poor planning and implementation of policies, particularly the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies, which he said was done “without a plan” and without cushioning the impact on Nigerians.
This led to a sharp increase in transportation costs and the overall cost of living, making life harder for many Nigerians.
He condemned the government’s approach to infrastructure projects, pointing to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway where only about 30 kilometers out of over 700 kilometers have been commissioned.
Ameh described this as an embarrassment and argued that it showed a lack of belief in completing the project.
He also highlighted the neglect of other critical infrastructure such as the 46,000 kilometers of federal roads that remain in disrepair.
Ameh criticized the government’s budget management, describing it as a “mismatch” and a “mess” that fails to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians.
He urged the president to work with competent experts who understand the economy and governance to improve policy implementation.
