Political analyst Hakeem Baba-Ahmed recently commented on the complex position of Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 elections, as reported by Vanguard.

He explained that Atiku is considered too weak to mount a serious challenge against President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term. At the same time, Baba-Ahmed noted, Atiku is too significant a political figure to easily fit into the plans or schemes of other politicians seeking the presidency.

According to Baba-Ahmed, Atiku’s status within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains both an advantage and a challenge. While he holds a dominant position in the party, this prominence has also caused grievances among other members, complicating internal dynamics.

Baba-Ahmed pointed out that if Atiku were to leave the PDP in search of another political platform, he would face considerable difficulties, including the need for substantial resources and energy.

He further stated that Atiku could consider stepping back from his presidential ambitions and focus instead on engineering a broader political reconfiguration in Nigeria.

However, Baba-Ahmed highlighted that politicians of Atiku’s profile often find it difficult to abandon the pursuit of the presidency, especially in a political system where the recycling of candidates is common.

Baba-Ahmed also observed that the PDP, under Atiku’s leadership, is struggling due to pressure from the ruling party. The party’s ability to form alliances or coalitions could be limited by Atiku’s ambitions, as some potential partners might demand concessions regarding his candidacy.

“Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar seems to have the biggest dilemma. He is too weak to take on Tinubu’s second term ambitions, and too big to fit into schemes of other politicians angling for platforms that will actualize their personal ambitions,” he said.
