In a recent video on YouTube, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder of Salvation Ministries, has stirred fresh conversation with his latest message during Sunday’s service, where he connected modern fashion choices among men—especially earrings—to biblical history and spiritual symbolism.
In a bold and provocative sermon, the charismatic pastor addressed what he views as a growing trend among young men and celebrities, particularly footballers, who wear multiple earrings. According to him, this fashion statement is a sign of spiritual ignorance and a misrepresentation of its biblical origin.
“Do you know it’s a sign of a release from slavery? Go and read your Bible,” he began, citing ancient Hebrew traditions. “When a slave is released in the seventh year, the first sign they do is to bore the man’s ear and put a ring.” (00:00:00)
Drawing directly from Old Testament customs, Ibiyeomie emphasized that the act of piercing a man’s ear had historical meaning beyond aesthetics:
“That’s a sign. When a slave is released in Israel, they now open the ear and put an earring to say this man is no longer a slave,” he explained. “So a man wearing earring is simply saying, ‘I am an ex-slave.’” (00:00:15)
He then shifted focus to contemporary culture, criticizing the widespread adoption of body piercings among male celebrities and sports figures.
“But now we are doing as guy. We doing as what?” he asked rhetorically. “You see footballers—we are here, we are here.” (00:00:33)
With visible disapproval, he mimicked the exaggerated piercings seen on some celebrities:
“So we even open eight from here to here. You see ‘gary gary gary gary gary.’” (00:00:38)
Pastor Ibiyeomie’s sermon called for discernment and a return to spiritual understanding, urging his congregation not to blindly follow trends without considering their origins and implications.
