Former Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to a statement made by Peter Obi, the ex-governor of Anambra State, regarding poverty in Northern Nigeria.
As reported by The Cable, Peter Obi blamed the high rate of poverty and insecurity in the North on poor access to education. He noted that if the education gap is bridged, the region has the potential to lead the country in growth and development. He stated, “And when you have poverty, you have humanity that you cannot control because when people don’t know where the next meal will come from, you can never control their actions.”

Sani questioned the trend of highlighting poverty in the North while portraying the South as problem-free. In his words, “The way some people talk about poverty in Northern Nigeria looks as if it is wealth, abundance and paradise in Southern Nigeria.”
His comment suggests that poverty is not limited to one part of the country and should be addressed as a national concern. Sani seemed to urge leaders and commentators to take a more balanced view when discussing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
