The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, refuted allegations suggesting he was collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to The Vanguard, in an interview with BBC Hausa, he also defended his association with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, in the face of growing internal party criticism.
Damagum reportedly dismissed accusations of being an APC puppet, asserting his steadfast loyalty to the PDP. He was quoted as saying that God should judge between him and those who had slandered him, particularly regarding rumours that he had met President Bola Tinubu in England.
He stressed his dedication to the PDP since 1999 and noted that he had never defected from the party. According to him, those who disliked him were simply trying to manipulate public perception for their own interests, whether through praise or criticism.
He also addressed concerns over his connection with Wike, a significant figure within the APC-led government. He acknowledged their association but denied any wrongdoing.
He said, “For all those who accuse me of having links with the Minister of FCT, I know him or have had links with him, and many of them have had links with him. My only fault here is that I did not allow them to do what they wanted with him.”
The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party expressed disappointment regarding the defection of certain members to the All Progressives Congress, acknowledging it as a setback for the party. He reportedly denied claims that those who left had been mistreated and emphasized that any loss, even of a single individual, was disheartening. He noted that it was natural to feel sadness in such circumstances.
