Senate President Godswill Akpabio has raised concerns about how strict military disciplinary measures may inadvertently fuel insecurity across Nigeria, warning that discharged soldiers often transfer their tactical knowledge to militant groups.
During a media coverage by Platinum TV, Akpabio highlighted this serious security vulnerability: “This is worrisome. By the time we have that security summit, you’ll realize that the reason why these things have leaked to militants is because we also have a problem – the discipline, sometimes we have high-handedness.”
The Senate President pointed to potentially counterproductive personnel practices: “When the police will throw away trained officers for minor offenses. The army will, out of discipline, sack over 100 soldiers, many of them will go into training your militants. And then the languages that they were taught will now be passed to the militants.”
Akpabio called for a comprehensive review of security recruitment and retention policies: “So, we will discuss the issue of recruitment because I believe that the security operatives are as good as their training. How do you even recruit them? Because most of these so-called militants who are training people in bushes across Nigeria were once security agents who, for one reason or the other, found their way out.”
He emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to Nigeria’s security challenges: “So, it’s important we also have to look at the strength of the fighting forces in the country. Are they sufficient to combat the rising insecurity? What about the communities? How can we best utilize the vigilantes? How can we have community policing? How can we have community protection? What should families look out for?”
The Senate President expressed particular concern that standard military communication protocols have been compromised, noting that insurgents have now mastered strategic military communication codes. Akpabio specifically mentioned that the phonetic alphabet used by security forces — “Alfa Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliet, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu” — has become known to criminal elements.
This intelligence compromise, according to Akpabio, necessitates an urgent overhaul of military communication systems to restore operational security and effectiveness in the nation’s fight against insurgency.
