There are growing signs that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may team up with Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, for the 2027 elections, this time with Obi as Atiku’s running mate on a one-term joint ticket.
According to Punch Newspaper, the proposal was first discussed earlier this year during a meeting between Atiku and Obi in the United Kingdom. Atiku reportedly promised to serve only one four-year term and then hand over to Obi, who has now shown interest in being his running mate again.
However, Obi is said to be consulting with his inner circle before making any public commitment. Obi previously ran as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but they lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.
In March 2024, Atiku, Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others announced a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027. This sparked major debate, with many wondering whether a united opposition could truly challenge the ruling party.
Now, nearly two months later, both the PDP and LP are still dealing with internal struggles, but talks between Atiku and Obi appear to be moving forward. A party insider said the goal is to wrap up discussions soon, as most parties are expected to unveil their candidates by mid-2026.
The source made it known that both leaders have agreed in principle and are working out the details, including possibly signing a written agreement to formalize the partnership.
