Ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections, a report by The Punch revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reportedly offered Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, the position of vice president on a joint single-term ticket.
According to multiple reliable sources involved in the ongoing coalition discussions, this proposal was first floated during a meeting between Atiku and Obi earlier this year in the United Kingdom.
The arrangement reportedly involves Atiku committing to serve only a single four-year term as president before handing over power to Obi, who has agreed to be his running mate.
This potential coalition is widely viewed as a strategic move to consolidate opposition forces against the incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
Atiku, Obi, and other key politicians appear united in the belief that only a solid alliance can successfully challenge the ruling party’s dominance in the next election cycle.
However, the report sparked a sharp and sarcastic response from Nyesom Wike’s camp.
Lere Olayinka, an aide for the FCT Minister, took to X (formerly Twitter) to mock the narrative by flipping the story on its head. He tweeted, “2027 Coalition Proposal: Peter Obi Camp Offers Atiku VP role in a one-term deal,” accompanied by a photo of Peter Obi shaking hands with Atiku Abubakar.
Olayinka’s sarcastic jab suggests skepticism about the reported offer, hinting at the complex and often fluid nature of political negotiations in Nigeria.
As the political drama unfolds, all eyes remain on Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, whose next moves could significantly reshape the opposition’s chances in 2027.
