Rep. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, who is currently the longest serving northern member in the House of Representatives from Kano state, during an interview with The Vanguard correspondent, spoke on the cause of the high rate of poverty and insecurity in the northern region, despite their political dominance.

Revealing what he believed to be the root cause of the issue, Doguwa said that, in his view, the major factor was the social culture and tradition of the people. He explained that changing tradition was a difficult task. Using himself as an example, he noted that he was married to four wives, which came with significant responsibilities.

He expressed gratitude for being financially comfortable, saying that his salary or allowances likely enabled him to sustain his family. However, he questioned how others with four or five wives but without stable financial means were able to manage. He stressed that the situation was largely a matter of tradition, adding that as long as his religion permitted him and others to marry multiple wives and continue having children, population growth would inevitably remain an issue.

Further talking, he said, “When the culture doesn’t stop it, tradition doesn’t stop it, and religion doesn’t stop it, then, the high population in the north will continue to be our problem. And I am telling you, I cannot help it. I am happy with my four wives, and I am still producing, I am still counting. Nobody will stop me. And I believe my other brothers in the north won’t stop.”

He claimed that for as long as they continue with their tradition and their culture, then their problem of having great serious economic inequality amongst their ranks will continue to persist.
