Legal expert Evans Ufeli has shared his thoughts about the government’s decision to label the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization. He pointed out a clear inconsistency in how the government treats different groups, noting that when IPOB was designated a terrorist group, other violent groups in Nigeria, such as bandits, were not given the same label.

In an interview with NEWS CENTRAL TV, Ufeli explained that at the time the government banned IPOB, several groups involved in violence, including bandits, had not yet been officially classified as terrorists.

He mentioned that the U.S. government only required these bandits to be labeled as terrorists when Nigeria expressed interest in purchasing military aircraft. The jets could not be used against any group that wasn’t recognized as a terrorist organization.

His words,

“When the federal government proscribed IPOB, at that time, some terrorist organizations in Nigeria, such as bandits and others, were not even been proscribed. It was only when they wanted to get a military jet that the US stated that you can not take this jet to Nigeria unless you have gone to officially declared those bandits as terrorists first, because it cannot be used against any other organization other than terrorists.”
