In a video that was shared by Sahara TV, a member of the House of Representatives from Borno State recently spoke out about the fight against Boko Haram, claiming that mercenaries were once brought in to help end the insurgency but were sent back due to personal interests and political reasons.
The lawmaker recalled how, during the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan, mercenaries were hired to fight Boko Haram in Borno State. “During Jonathan, we brought mercenaries, they were about to finish Boko Haram, but because of our complacency and personal aggrandizement and personal interest, we asked them to go back,” he said.
These highly skilled fighters, fewer than 30 in number, were able to track Boko Haram’s movements and precisely target their strongholds. They had high-tech equipment, such as laptops, that allowed them to monitor enemy activities and gather information, including the number of weapons the militants had.
The mercenaries, the lawmaker explained, were effective and could quickly destroy Boko Haram camps. However, just as they were about to finish the job, the decision was made to send them home. The reason, according to the lawmaker, was personal interest and the fear that the government and some political figures wouldn’t benefit if mercenaries were allowed to finish the job. He pointed out that mercenaries, who are hired fighters, are used by countries like Russia, and there’s no shame in hiring them if it helps protect the nation.
The lawmaker also addressed those who criticized the National Assembly, saying that although laws are in place to fight Boko Haram, the real issue is the lack of enforcement. He emphasized that the decision to bring mercenaries was the right one, but political games led to their removal.
