A United Kingdom-based civil society organisation, the Congress for the Defence of Citizens (CDC), has issued a scathing critique of Nigeria’s worsening security situation, urging President Bola Tinubu to urgently sack the current service chiefs.

In a statement signed by its Global Convener, Prince Ugo, and published by The Nation Newspaper, the group decried the alarming rise in violent attacks across the country, particularly the abduction of Nigerian soldiers in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State. The CDC said these incidents show a complete breakdown of Nigeria’s security structure.

The organisation condemned what it called the military’s “reactionary and scattered” responses to insurgent attacks, stating that terrorist groups have become emboldened by the military’s weak posture. It also expressed concern over the loss of military-grade equipment and the ease with which attackers now target security formations.

“This is not a time for diplomacy or delay,” the group warned, insisting that a full overhaul of Nigeria’s security leadership is the only way to salvage the country from spiraling insecurity. Prince Ugo added that the CDC is working with Nigerian diaspora communities and international rights groups to document recent security failures.

The group’s concluding statement captured the gravity of the moment: “What we are seeing is beyond failure—it is a total collapse. The military is no longer able to defend even itself. Just recently, terrorists seized billions of naira worth of weapons, and now they’ve taken our soldiers into hiding.”
