In the aftermath of Monday’s devastating attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Marte, Borno State, disturbing revelations have emerged pointing to an alleged betrayal from within.

According to a report by The PUNCH, the terrorists launched a surprise assault on the forward operating base, killing five soldiers, looting arms, and escaping with military vehicles and newly-issued motorbikes. The attack left the base in ruins, forcing some soldiers to abandon their duty posts and flee to their hometowns.

While the Nigerian Army continues efforts to restore order and reassure residents, sources within the military have disclosed that the attack may have been made possible due to internal compromise.

An anonymous source revealed that a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), entrusted with supporting military operations, allegedly facilitated the deadly incursion. “He was very close to our adjutant. We never suspected him,” the source noted.

This breach has heightened tensions within the ranks, particularly as the insurgents continue to exploit weaknesses in security infrastructure. Local residents have reportedly fled from Marte and surrounding communities to safer locations like Dikwa and Mafa, fearing further violence.

The betrayal underscores the complex nature of the insurgency and the evolving tactics used by militants to undermine the military. “A civilian Joint Task Force member, someone we trusted, sold us out. He led the insurgents to our camp. His name is Sharu. He was close to our adjutant and considered part of the team,” the military source revealed.
