A group of women in Rivers State, led by prominent environmental and human rights activist Ankio Briggs have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the political crisis rocking the state and reinstate Governor Siminalayi Fubara before May 29.
In a video shared by Channels Television from 0:46, the women at Rivers State Ecumenical Centre church expressed deep concern over what they described as an “awful decision” affecting the leadership of the state. Briggs and other women speaking on behalf of the group made a direct plea to the president.
“We are appealing to His Excellency, the president of Nigeria to tamper justice with peace. We are asking him to call back our governor,” she said. “We are crying, praying, calling on the elders of the state, elder statesmen and everyone that is involved in this awful decision. We are praying that there will be a peaceful resolution to this matter. Return Fubara before May 29.”
The demonstration reflects growing tension in the state amid ongoing political unrest and calls for federal intervention. Governor Fubara has been embroiled in a standoff with political opponents and elements within the state assembly, prompting fears of a looming leadership vacuum.
The women urged stakeholders to act swiftly to prevent further instability and to ensure the will of the people is respected.
Briggs, known for her decades-long activism in the Niger Delta, emphasized that the protest was not politically motivated but born out of a desire for justice, peace, and democratic stability.
As May 29 Democracy Day in Nigeria approaches, the women called for urgent reconciliation and warned that the state could face deeper unrest if the issue remains unresolved.
