The Lagos State Government has expressed strong disapproval of landlords and property agents who unjustly raise rents, taking advantage of local residents. In a firm move to protect tenants, officials are planning to step in against these practices, as reported by PUNCH.
Barakat Bakare, the Special Adviser on Housing for the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority, conveyed this message during a live segment on TVC’s program “YOUR VIEW.” She asserted that the government would not allow landlords and agents to exploit residents any longer.
Additionally, Bakare clarified the different functions of real estate agents and lawyers regarding rental issues, pointing out that legal professionals have limitations in managing rental transactions.
This explanation according to Bakare is intended to assist residents in better understanding real estate processes.
Moreover, Bakare revealed that the Lagos State tenancy law is currently under revision. The purpose of this revision is to introduce necessary regulations, including those concerning caution fees, which are not adequately addressed in the existing law. The government aims to create a more just rental market that safeguards the interests of tenants.
Bakare stated,
“Lagos State Government would no longer fold its arms and watch its residents being exploited by landlords and agents.”
