In an interview with TV360 from 17:25, Liborous Oshoma, a lawyer and public affairs analyst, expressed concerns about the current state of the Labour Party and its prospects for the future. According to Oshoma, the party is grappling with internal divisions that could undermine its ability to compete effectively in upcoming elections. He specifically pointed to the factionalization within the party, especially at the local government level, as a major issue that could hinder its chances of success in future elections.

Oshoma highlighted the actions of Alex Otti, who reportedly moved his supporters for the local government election to a different political party, further fragmenting the party’s base. He remarked that such divisions were typically seen in ruling parties, where there is often something to gain, but not in opposition parties like the Labour Party, which had only secured third place in the previous national election. This situation, Oshoma argued, makes the party’s future uncertain, especially with the ruling party, led by President Bola Tinubu, consolidating power and attracting new governors into its fold.

The analyst also pointed out that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, should be taking more proactive steps to unite the party, especially given the divisions within its ranks. He noted that the opposition party’s internal strife could provide an advantage to Tinubu’s APC in the long term, making it even harder for Labour to compete in 2027. According to Oshoma, Peter Obi and the Labour Party need to resolve their internal issues quickly if they are to remain relevant and effective in the political landscape.

In his words;

“The local government election conducted by Alex Otti, all his supporters for that Local Government election, he moved them to a different political party. So already the party is factionalized at that level. What’s the guarantee that they’d remain in that platform. It’s only a rulling party that usually have this kind of Faction, because there’s always food to share, not a party in opposition that came distant third in the national election.”
