In a deeply emotional and fiery tribute, Peter Obi didn’t mince words as he addressed the state of Nigeria during a memorial gathering. While honoring the life of a courageous man who lived for justice and equity, Obi used the opportunity to expose what he described as the brutal truth about modern-day Nigerian.

According to him, the sacrifices made by national heroes and freedom fighters have been rendered useless by the current state of affairs in the country. “May the labor of our heroes not be in vain?” he asked. “I’m sorry, but it already is.”

Obi drew stark comparisons between past and present civic behavior. He questioned the silence of protesters in recent years, especially during times of severe economic decline. “Where are those who protested when petrol moved from 87 to 120 naira?” he asked. “Now that it’s 900, are they dead?”

He called out the hypocrisy and silence that has become normalized in a country where poverty, hunger, and injustice are skyrocketing. Referencing statistics, he mentioned that over 75% of Nigerians in rural areas live in poverty and that UNICEF recently confirmed Nigeria as the second highest country in the world for child malnutrition, with over two million affected children.

In his most scathing remarks, Obi said, “We are not a democratic country. Let’s stop pretending.” Referring to the recently concluded election in Edo State, he labeled it “the most undemocratic election ever held.” It was at this moment he thundered: “This is not democracy, this is fraud!” — words that sent shockwaves across social media and news platforms.

As the room fell silent, Obi closed by urging Nigerians to “start picking up the pieces” and reflect on what their forefathers lived and died for. “Let’s do the right thing. Let’s fight for justice, equity, and truth—because that’s what he stood for.”
