Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu in the Office of the Vice President, has strongly opposed the long-standing political custom that the president must hold office for two tenures, calling it detrimental to Nigeria’s development.

Daily Post reported that he criticized the growing belief that, just because former Northern President Muhammadu Buhari was in office for two terms, the South must likewise have a president for eight years.

Baba-Ahmed questioned the logic of this argument, claiming it is one of the many toxic factors destroying politics in Nigeria.

In his words, “Now you hear things like he must do his eight years; what about the South? We have taken to very crude politics and put it on the constitution, where everyone is saying the South must have its eight years because Buhari did. Where is this thing coming from?”

He clarified that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and other regional organizations, such as Ohanaeze and Afenifere, publicly opposed Buhari’s attempt to run for president a second time after determining he had fallen short of expectations.

Baba-Ahmed expressed regret that political office is no longer viewed as a national duty based on performance but rather as a regional privilege.

He cautioned that holding onto power despite issues with one’s age, health, or competence just because one is from the area is an attitude that makes Nigeria decline.

Speaking about the 2027 presidential elections, Baba-Ahmed urged prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Bola Tinubu, and Peter Obi to resign so that a new generation of leaders can take power.

He insisted that these political veterans had outlived their usefulness after controlling the political landscape for many years without bringing about significant change.

He maintained that rather than reusing old and worn-out politicians who have only been in office for the past 20 to 30 years, Nigeria needs new leadership with the drive, vision, and dedication to face the nation’s growing problems.
