Elder statesman and former National Secretary of Afenifere, Senator Femi Okurounmu, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited a country in ruins due to the misrule of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, and that rescuing Nigeria from its current state will be a daunting task.

The statement was made in an exclusive interview with PUNCH, where Okurounmu spoke extensively on the challenges facing the nation, the state of governance, and the need for structural reforms.

He noted that the level of decay in the Nigerian system, particularly under Buhari’s administration, had left the country’s socio-political and economic foundations deeply fractured.

Okurounmu criticized the previous administration for worsening insecurity across the country, especially through what he described as its tacit support for violent non-state actors, including the influx of foreign herdsmen.

He attributed much of the current instability in regions such as Benue, Plateau, and Southern Kaduna to policies and decisions made during Buhari’s tenure, which he believes were designed to favour a particular ethnic agenda.

While acknowledging that President Tinubu is facing a mountain of problems, Okurounmu maintained that only strong, decisive, and honest leadership can steer Nigeria out of its current crisis.

He emphasized the need for Tinubu to prioritize the fight against corruption, which he described as a disease embedded in Nigeria’s political fabric since the era of General Ibrahim Babangida.

He said: “I think President Bola Tinubu has done his best. He’s doing his best. He met with a lot of problems when he assumed office almost two years ago. When he got to power, Buhari had ruined the country before Tinubu got to power, so taking the country out of that ruin, is not an easy job. So, I believe Tinubu is doing his best. There are many challenges that he is facing.
