Media mogul and politician, Dele Momodu has revealed that he was once summoned by a high-ranking army general over his persistent criticism of the government.

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, Momodu recounted how even former President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired army general, invited him for a private meeting to address his outspoken views.

“I used to write about leaders. I used to advise them,” Momodu said. “Even President Buhari, who was a retired army general, on one occasion had to invite me to his office to ask me daily, ‘What is the problem?’”.

Momodu, who was a vocal supporter of Buhari during the 2014 and 2015 elections, said he explained to the former president that his role as a critic came from a place of responsibility and patriotism.

“I was one of those that supported 2014 and 2015,” he stated. “And I explained to him that I always appoint myself as that Special Adviser without portfolio.”

The revelation highlights the tension that often exists between government officials and public commentators in Nigeria, particularly those who transition from supporters to critics.

Momodu emphasized that his critiques are rooted in a desire to see the country improve not in any personal vendetta against individuals in power.

His comments offer insight into the often delicate relationship between media, civil society and political leadership in Nigeria.

As someone who has played both political and journalistic roles, Momodu’s experience reflects the broader challenges faced by public figures who speak truth to power in a highly sensitive political environment.
