The South-South Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), George Turnah, has opened up about the political history between Minister Nyesom Wike and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, highlighting an unexpected show of forgiveness from the former Rivers governor.
Speaking in an interview with The Sun, Turnah recalled how Wike was not supported by Diri during the PDP presidential primaries. “When Minister Nyesom Wike wanted to be president and sought the presidential ticket of the PDP, Governor Diri did not support him,” he said. Turnah noted that Governor Diri clearly instructed Bayelsa delegates to back another candidate. “We were all in Abuja here. The governor directed all the delegates from Bayelsa to vote for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,” he added.
According to Turnah, this history made it surprising to many when Wike chose to back Diri’s re-election bid. He also claimed that Wike went beyond political endorsement. “Beyond the political support that Wike gave, he also gave him financial support. He did,” Turnah stated.
The comments reflect the evolving relationships within the PDP and underscore the influence Wike still holds in the region’s politics.
